Reverse osmosis is a process where water passes through a special semipermeable membrane to separate it from the solute by applying a pressure greater than osmotic pressure. Since this process is opposite to osmosis, it is called reverse osmosis. It is used for separating, extracting, purifying, and concentrating solutions based on the osmotic pressure of different materials. This method can remove organic substances with small ionic particles, such as bacteria, toxins, heat sources, etc., and filtrate with low molecular weight.

The reverse osmosis system mainly separates ions in the solution. It does not require heating, and there is no phase transition, making it more energy-efficient compared to traditional methods. Reverse osmosis systems are compact, easy to use, and suitable for a wide range of applications. It is commonly used to purify industrial water without consuming large amounts of acid or hydroxide, reducing secondary contamination and keeping operational costs relatively low. Water treated by reverse osmosis achieves high purity, effectively removing not only ion-based impurities but also organic pollutants, microorganisms, viruses, and pyrogens, which are difficult to remove by other methods.
